Jake and Mattie

Need a Home of their Own

These wonderful littermates came to us from a shelter in Oklahoma in June, 2007 and at that time, they had a terrible time walking. Their feet would turn over and they'd walk on top of them, and would fall over with almost every step. We took them to see Paul Dean, DVM, in Tulsa, OK who performed surgery to correct their feet and they are now sound, happy, healthy, and get along just beautifully! We did not opt to straighten their legs as that would have been an extremely complicated and painful surgery. Instead, as Dr. Dean recommended, we decided to have their feet corrected so they could walk. As you can see below, their legs are still crooked, but they are standing flat on their feet and that was our goal.

Here are a couple of videos of them walking:

They run and play and wrestle with the other dogs and are basically normal in every way. Mattie still has a little turn of her foot, but it doesn't bother her and there's just not much she can't do. Jake is doing equally as well. They can handle stairs, but as with every basset, we do not encourage it.

Here they are discovering the cat (who they really like, by the way!):

You will not find a sweeter pair of dogs anywhere! They are very loving, mind well, and are completely house trained. They would prefer to sit or lay next to each other by your side instead of on the furniture. They have their own beds, and once you tuck them in for the night and cover them with their blankies, they stay there! They like toys, other dogs and cats, and would be great with older children. They can be a bit timid at first, but once they get used to their surroundings, they are as happy and content as any other dogs. And, because they are very bonded and dependent on each other, we will not separate them.

Dr. Dean does not anticipate any issues with their legs in the future. He does recommend that we keep their weight down and supplement them with glucosamine for their joints, and that's it!

Here's more pictures of these precious houndies:

Mattie and Jake's adoption donation will be $250 for the pair.
